Insecticide Susceptibility Status of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) and the Risk of Yellow Fever Transmission in the Savannah, Upper East and Upper West Regions of Ghana

Abstract

Aedes-borne diseases such as Yellow Fever and Dengue remain major public health challenges in many countries, including Ghana. This study assessed the insecticide susceptibility status of Aedes aegypti and the risk of Yellow Fever transmission in the Savannah, Upper East, and Upper West Regions of Ghana. Larval and adult mosquito collections were conducted in Damongo, Bolgatanga, and Nadowli over 16 months in 2015 and 2016. A total of 6,630 Aedes mosquitoes were collected, with Aedes aegypti being the predominant species (97%). High larval indices indicated a high risk of Yellow Fever transmission in all study areas. Insecticide susceptibility tests revealed suspected resistance to deltamethrin, permethrin, and propoxur in Bolgatanga, while Aedes aegypti from Damongo showed resistance to pyrethroids but susceptibility to carbamates. The presence of the kdr gene mutation (F1534C) was detected in 65% of the tested mosquitoes. Regular monitoring of insecticide resistance is essential for effective vector control strategies.
