Author Guidelines

The Journal of the Ghana Science Association (JGSA) accepts original papers, reviews, and short communications on all scientific and technological subjects from Ghana and other countries. It is published at least twice annually.

Text Preparation

The structure of the main text should follow this order:

  • Abstract – Comprehensive summary of the paper
  • Introduction – Context and objectives of the research
  • Method – Detailed description of research methodology
  • Results – Presentation of research findings
  • Discussion – Interpretation of results
  • Conclusion – Summary of key findings and implications

These headings should be typed in lowercase but boldface (left-aligned) and numbered 1, 2, 3, etc. Subsections should be numbered (e.g., 1.1 in normal text and 1.1.1 in italics for further subsections). Follow this order with Acknowledgements and References.

Abstract

The abstract should be typed in block format (no paragraphs or subdivisions) and provide a comprehensive summary of the paper, stating the major result or conclusion. It should be able to stand by itself but must not contain any references.

References

References should be cited in the text by indicating author(s) and year of publication:

When part of a sentence: Menyeh and O’Reilly (1991); Menyeh et al. (1997)

When inserted within a sentence: (Menyeh and O’Reilly, 1991); (Menyeh et al., 1997)

Only references cited in the text should be listed alphabetically at the end of the paper:

Book Reference

O’Reilly, W. (1984). Rock and Mineral Magnetism, Blackie, Glasgow, pp. 120-125.

Journal Reference

Menyeh, A., & O’Reilly, W. (1991). The magnetization process in monoclinic pyrrhotite particles containing few domains. Geophys. J. Int., 104, 387-399.

Conference Proceedings

Ofosu-Asiedu, A. (1997). “The Wood Industry and the Environment”. In: A. Menyeh, S. Osafo Acquaah, & W. O. Ellis (Eds.), Proceedings of the 20th Biennial Conference, Kumasi, 4th August, 1997, pp. 19-34.

Tables

The maximum size for a table is 150 mm × 200 mm. Tables should be without outside borders or lines for row and column entries. Only column headings should be enclosed between top and bottom borders.

Formatting Note: Number tables consecutively (Table 1, Table 2) and refer to them in the text. Titles should be in boldface (e.g., Table 1. Variation of Temperature with Pressure). Indicate desired location lightly in pencil in the right-hand margin.

Illustrations

Maximum size for illustrations is 150 × 200 mm. Prepare originals using black drawing ink on quality tracing or white paper. Laser/Inkjet prints are acceptable. All maps and sketches must include a metric bar scale. Lettering should be ≥1 mm after reproduction.

  • Number figures consecutively (Fig. 1, Fig. 2)
  • Label parts as (a), (b), etc. (referenced as Fig. 1(a))
  • Write author name and figure number lightly in pencil on reverse
  • Type captions double-spaced on separate sheets
  • Photographs should be sharp, glossy prints (B&W preferred)

Dimensions

Use S.I. units throughout. Employ negative indices instead of / and include space between numbers and symbols (e.g., 1.5 m s⁻¹, not 1.5 ms⁻¹ or 1.5 m/s).

Equations

Type equations in Math Mode (e.g., z = ax + by). Number multiple equations consecutively (e.g., z = ax + by … (1)). Clarify Greek symbols in the right-hand margin when first used.

Peer Review Process: Each manuscript will be evaluated by at least two independent reviewers to ensure academic quality and rigor.

Proofs & Copyright

Authors will receive proofs for review and must return them promptly for timely publication.

By submitting to JGSA, authors transfer copyright to the Ghana Science Association. No part may be reproduced without prior written permission.

Evaluation Criteria

  • Originality – Novel contribution to the field
  • Methodology – Appropriate and rigorous methods
  • Results – Well-presented and supported by data
  • Discussion – Logical interpretation of findings
  • Clarity – Clear and concise writing

Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement

The Journal of the Ghana Science Association (JGSA) is committed to publishing quality papers and strongly recommends that all stakeholders adhere to the following ethical standards.

Duties of the Editor-in-Chief

Publication Decisions

The Editor-in-Chief, in consultation with the editorial team, is responsible for deciding which submitted articles should be published based on the reviewer comments received for each manuscript.

Fairness

All submitted manuscripts will be assessed fairly, and those found to be compliant with editorial policy and submission requirements will be put through the review process without regard to the race, gender, sexual orientation, or institutional affiliation of the author(s).

Confidentiality

The Editor-in-Chief and supporting staff will handle information on a submitted manuscript with confidentiality.

Disclosure of Conflicts of Interest

The Editor-in-Chief and the Editorial Board will avoid all forms of situations presenting a potential conflict of interest.

Duties of Reviewers

Promptness

Peer reviewers are expected to submit their reports per the stipulated time but can request an extension when necessary. Peer reviewers are at liberty to decline a review request if they feel unqualified or unable to meet deadlines.

Confidentiality

All manuscripts received for review will be treated as confidential by the reviewers.

Professionalism

Reviewers are expected to apply the strictest codes of scientific professionalism to the process and must not use or quote from any manuscripts they review without permission.

Conflict of Interest

Reviewers should notify the Editor-in-Chief whenever there is a potential conflict of interest.

Duties of Authors

Originality and Plagiarism

Authors must ensure that the manuscripts presented are their original works and must appropriately cite all referenced materials. Manuscripts found to have plagiarized material will be rejected. If plagiarism is discovered after publication, the Editor-in-Chief will publish a retraction of the manuscript in the subsequent issue.

Acknowledgment of Sources

Authors must properly acknowledge works or publications that have been influential in determining the research.

Authorship of the Article

The corresponding author should ensure that all appropriate coauthors are included on the manuscript, and that all coauthors have approved the final version of the manuscript and agreed to its submission for publication.

Simultaneous Publication

Authors should not submit the same manuscript to more than one journal at the same time for consideration of publication. If an author believes there are undue delays, the Editor-in-Chief must be notified of the intention to withdraw, and the author must receive a response from the Editor-in-Chief before submitting it elsewhere.

Fundamental Errors in Published Works

When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in his/her own published work, the author is obliged to promptly notify the Editor-in-Chief and fully cooperate with the Editor-in-Chief to correct the article or retract it.

Disclosure

All sources of financial support for the research should be disclosed in the manuscript.

The JGSA adheres to international standards for publication ethics, including guidelines from COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics), ICMJE (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors), and WAME (World Association of Medical Editors). For further clarification, authors and reviewers may contact the Editor-in-Chief at editorinchief@ghanascience.gov.gh / info@ghanascience.gov.gh
